Hello, I’m new to the forum. I’ve figured out that I have insomnia over the last 3 or 4 years. I always wake up tired and can’t get to sleep naturally. I can’t tell if it’s my job or just my personality but I want to stay awake doing activities until I literally can keep my eyes open then I wake up and it’s time to go to work again. I’ve tried nightcap to help but that turns into 4 nightcap and then I am a bit hung over the next morning at work so that doesn’t work. I’ve tried tea and melatonin but neither really work. Anyways, I’m joining to talk to other people that might have the same scenario as me.

Welcome to the forum! First of all, it’s important to recognize that you CAN sleep naturally! If you deliberately tried to stay awake for five days without sleep, then allowed yourself to sleep do you think you’d still not be able to sleep? If you can recognize that you would probably sleep at that point, you can see that you CAN still sleep naturally!

As you’ve realized, alcohol, tea, and melatonin are not effective treatments for chronic insomnia — but cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is. Have you looked into CBT-I?

At the current time, when do you usually go to bed at the start of the night, when do you get out of bed to start your day, and roughly how many hours of sleep do you get on a typical night?
