Hi, I am new here. I have had insomnia for at least 2 years… I also been hooked on Ambien and Ambien CR…My body started getting used to them… when I still could not fall asleep with them I would take more then I should and run out… I would either sit there for 3 days with withdrawls…and when I did fall asleep I had night terrors or night mares.. For years I was taking Phentermine for dieting… or to wake me up in the morning. (I stopped the diet pills last month)
I was sleeping pretty good (with my sleeping pills) we had gotten a new bed… which made me sleep even better… Well last week I started to have back pain… I could not sleep at all… I would take more sleeping pills… my doctor even gave me more pills (i was out of ambien… he gave me Sonota)…. I could not sleep on them… I ended up taking more then I should… I had 3 hours of sleep that night. The next day I could not stand the pain in my back anymore… and it felt like I had a pole going through me. I could not stand i anymore… so I went to the er…then they admitted me in the hospital. I spent Saturday and Sunday night with hardly any sleep. (That is 4 days hardly any sleep) This was my body's way of telling me there was something wrong and I take it as a warning to straighten out my sleeping and eating habits. So today I am finally home in my own bed… I tell you those hospital beds are really hard to sleep in. At least I know it is my stomach issues that are causing my insomnia….and some other stuff..So the doctor gave me anti- anxiety meds and pain pills for my back…. so I will be sleeping good tonight on our new bed my husband calls the cloud.

Your story and experience with sleep medication doesn't surprise me and is all too common. I'm sure if you take a quick look around the forums you'll see a lot of stories similar to your own.
How did you hurt your back? I hope you feel better soon.

November 22, 2013 at 5:03 pm #14901I'm not clear as to what you are doing now. Are you still using Ambien, and if so what dosage. Also you indicate when you went to the hospital you were told stomach and other issues were causing your insomnia. Could you provide a little more detail on this. I have had insomnia for about a half year and still don't know the cause for sure. I use a low dose Ambien once or twice a week when I wake up and can't get back to sleep and it gives me between 2 to 3 hours additional sleep added on to the sleep I had before I woke up in the night. I would prefer to not use it at all but there are times I need to do something the next day where I don't want to be a zombie or I just crave the additional sleep time. So I'm curious at to what your current status is with regard to taking Ambien and the causes of your insomnia.

I still am on the ambien cr… and they gave me atavan to relax me. I seem to only take the atavan once a day… mostly during the evening. I also have completely cut myself off coke and caffeen. And trying to change my eatting habits. I have Gerd, a hiatal hernea and other crap which I really don't want to mention and the Gerd and hernea which I am still confused about…. i can not lay down after I eat. I have not tried to fall asleep without the ambien. And since the hospital they gave me atavan to help me relax.I see my main doctor and my ob/gyn to see if there is anything else going on that I need to be checked… It seems whatever is going on wit me is effecting my period not (tmi) but it is very light since day one like if it was spotting. I have not tried to fall asleep without the ambien cr…. but last week I was able to take a nap for the first time in ages. Right now I am still trying to get my strength back and need to deal with the clean laundry pile that I somehow I have not had the energy to put away since I came back from the hospital. (I was in for 6 days)
