Not being able to stick to a regular sleep schedule makes it very difficult for your body to regulate the biological sleep/wake rhythm. With that being said, there are some things you can do to make things a bit more tolerable:
- The day before the day you are to clock-in on night shift, get some exercise.
- While you are working your night shifts, eat real food (avoid processed or convenience food).
- If you tend to consume caffeine, consume it during the first half of your shift, not the last half of your shift.
- When your shift is over and it is time to go home, wear very dark sunglasses to minimize light exposure.
- Go to bed as soon as you get home from a night shift.
- During your off days, make sure you get enough sleep.
