One Year Update – Long Term Solutions

      It has been a year since I graduated from the Insomnia Coach online course. After several years struggling with insomnia, this course taught me the behavioral and psychological skills to significantly improve my sleep. After suffering through nights of 0-3 hours of low quality sleep, my norm now is 6-7 hours of high quality sleep. I periodically have sleep disturbances but no longer get anxious about them because I know I have the tools to ensure the disturbance is just that, a disturbance that I manage and it resolves, not anything chronic like I had before. Having these long term solutions to sleep issues is very comforting and reduces any anxiety I may have about sleep.
      In parallel to the sleep solutions, a significant change I needed to make was to accept the fact that I could not control my sleep at all. As I get older I recognize that my body’s need for sleep has changed and I need to honor that. Therefore, instead of sleeping in on weekends or vacation, I get up at about the same time everyday and do not go to bed until I feel sleepy (which is distinctly different than feeling tired); and I never worry any longer about not getting enough sleep to have a good day because even if I got less sleep than usual, I know my body’s sleep drive will kick in.
      So for anyone who is considering Martin’s course, think of it as coaching to reach the potential that you naturally have – to routinely sleep when your body needs it.

        Wow, what a transformation, Anne-Claire — a transformation that is entirely down to your own efforts and your own natural ability to sleep (and to sleep well)!

        I particularly appreciate you sharing that you still have some difficult nights from time to time — because that’s a normal part of being a human being! What’s important (and a great testament to your progress) is that you no longer react to difficult nights in the same way that you once did — so your sleep can get right back on track all by itself.

        Ultimately, it sounds as though you’ve abandoned all effort to control sleep and that you no2 simply allow your body to generate whatever sleep it chooses to generate — all while living the kind of life you want to live, regardless! If we can do that, insomnia just cannot survive for the long term!
