      Hello Friends,

Let me first state that I’m open to anything at this point. I’m an epileptic and I’ve always blamed my lack of sleep on this. I wasn’t diagnosed until I was 30. I’m 54 now. When I was in college, I could sleep until 10:00 on a good Saturday but since then it’s gradually decreased to zero. The last eight years, I was on a controlled substance called Clonazepam that helped me at least fall asleep. The first night I took it, eight years ago it was like I had won the lottery; I slept straight until 10:00 am. My prayers had been answered but it slowly wore off. Like I said, I stayed on it because it did do some good. My neurologist wanted me off it and it took me over a month to rid myself of it. It can play some nasty games with you. It was pushing my heart rate up. I’m a runner so I knew that was BS. Since then, I tried TRAZODONE and TEMAZEPAM and neither worked. My neurologist told me that was it so I’m stuck with basically nothing. I’ve been taking a generic Unisom from Costco, along with some natural stuff I bought off of Amazon that hasn’t worked and I quit Benadry while doing this. I don’t drink at all but I’m thinking about trying Scotch. All of the material, I read says you wake up at 3:00. If that’s true, I’ll take that any day. I’m just looking for some far fetched ideas; I’ll try anything at this point as long as it’s safe.

      Sincerely,

      Steve

Hello Steve. Instead of looking for far-fetched ideas, have you looked for evidence-based techniques for chronic insomnia (specifically cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia)?

You mentioned that you are epileptic so it’s important not to pursue CBT-I techniques unless you are cleared by your doctor — however, I think it’s a discussion worth having since there is overwhelming evidence to support the effectiveness of CBT-I for people with chronic insomnia.
