I have a friend who doesnt have a clue what I’m going through. It’s discouraging because lm tired of trying to explain how sick I feel after no sleep, how it affects me mentally and physically. She also asked me to drive 45 min away when i really can’t drive at all. She doesn’t understand what im going through at all. I’m Thankful that there are others who have gone through this that really understand. I didn’t understand till I now am going through this. I get the idea that this friend thinks I am complaining when I’m only answering her question “How are you?” Hoping she will understand more. Now I have to explain that I can’t drive unless my sleep improves. I do not want her to feel sorry for me… this is no different from any other illness…I also have been diagnosed with Generlized anxiety disorder which makes everything worse. Thanks for letting me vent.
September 1, 2018 at 6:16 pm #23199I think you have written what many people feel and what many people here go through. The fact of the matter is, people without insomnia (or people who have never experienced insomnia) don’t know what it’s like to live with long-term sleep issues.
Everyone has heard the word insomnia, but the word is misunderstood, overused, and misused. Insomnia is not simply one bad night of sleep — it’s a long-term issue that can have a very real impact on quality of life. People with insomnia don’t get the support they need (or deserve).
One of the main aims of this forum is to have a place where those living with sleep deprivation can chat with others who know exactly what they’re going through. Thank you for sharing.

September 5, 2018 at 12:18 am #23211I totally understand. It’s a year and a half now. I don’t know how I am still alive and sane.
September 13, 2018 at 9:02 pm #23372I’m actually writing an article about what insomnia sufferers are tired of hearing.
If anyone else has something to contribute, please post it to this thread — what clichéd or ineffective advice do you receive when you tell someone about your sleep issues? What is the worst ‘advice’ you have been given?

September 18, 2018 at 12:32 am #23409That will be a great article. Even my doctors don’t take this seriously. I have a chronic condition that diminishes my quality of life, and they just try different meds, then shrug when nothing works. I have to go to mexico to get sleeping pills now. It’s awful. I hate begging doctors for medicine.
This is an illness and should be treated with respect. There is a reason why sleep deprivation is considered torture for prisoners of war. See the Geneva Accords.
Frustrating. After a year of seeing my doctor several times a month to try different meds, he eventually gave up and said there was nothing else to try. Isn’t that nice?
September 19, 2018 at 12:13 am #23464Ugh, that must be so frustrating. I am sorry to hear about your experience.

September 25, 2018 at 4:22 am #23544Responding to Theresa- I read your vent-
Until you experience for yourself to your degree
it is like when you here a story and you don’t
believe it. When I had a job and 4 plus hours of
sleep a night that must have been heaven. No,
it was just 12 years ago. I am even new to social
media to this degree, I am so desperate now.
Believe that or not, and now I am passing 6 days.
This is scary, Nothing has made a difference.
Doctor’s can only try to help, if that and then
individual tolerance. I shared in my 1st post
what hour I was at, this time. And the help
seemed surprised that I was doing so? I stopped
looking at time, serious. I am only counting
and now doing this because I am scared that
as I sit here and use this device is also a no-no
before bedtime. It is 9pm and for those who
can actually relate, I sent my 1st post at 11pm
last night. A mere 22 hours ago. The last sleep
I got was more than 6 days. You would think
each night, and no.
I would like to vent more- but that is one of
the many things I have been doing to help myself.
Smile about it instead of being upset that a friend
does not understand what it is like for us experience
and sharing. I had a hard time believing last time
when 111 hours was how long with out a bleeping
wink. And here we are again at 153 hours and counting.
Thank you again for letting me vent-
Theresa, Jillrunpee & Martin!
September 25, 2018 at 6:28 pm #23549I would like to give u a big hug I understand this feeling. It’s really frustrating when ppl think nothing much when u can’t slp. They think u are thinking too much…just relax..go slp when in reality u tried everything but can’t get to sleep.
I understand that tiredness and trying to keep in control of your life when inside u are crumbling.
I pray that we will recover from this together..
September 25, 2018 at 8:06 pm #23557Hugs right back. We are the exhausted people no one notices.
September 25, 2018 at 8:10 pm #23558BTW, I went to Mexico again this weekend. I like it there, but never miss a chance to get sleepy meds. It’s not cheap, but they don’t give me a hassle.
I try not to take them as often as possible to prolong my use of them. This is what I am reduced to.
I find if I get to bed around 9-10pm, I usually get a night I don’t need them, though I wake a lot. And I have too many loud unpleasant dreams on those nights. I miss having dreams that are just background noise, instead of ones that make me cry when I wake up. Anyone else having dream problems as they get more sleep?

“What Insomnia Sufferers Are Tired of Hearing”
Recognize any of these?! What did I miss?

November 17, 2018 at 7:42 pm #24050Hello Dear Friends, I hear you, I hear you, I hear you. Chris with the six nights -I’ve been there (3×). It is a rollercoaster though -u will /by now -have had some again..?… And the ‘rest of the world’ – even the way they turn their heads -quickly without pain (I watch them from another dead bus journey to work..) the way they use their faces, their expressions & eye contact. All of that has ceased for me with heavy duty sleep dep – I minimise painfully every move -feeling alone, ashamed, freakish…And of course in a lot of pain.
But actually when I open up to some ppl about it -they do say – my God this has started happening to me -Im too tired to walk up the stairs….Who knows what the hell they’re going through. I mean this brave face world thing hides a multitude of anxieties and pain and more and more folk struggling to sleep. Such devastation though, insomnia. Makes everyday an endurance test from hell. And the fear it can bring – I do live in hope though!!
November 17, 2018 at 7:42 pm #24051-but also to say oh bloody yes!! those ones that have zero insight and sympathy -for me they can trigger the situation even worse… That feeling of pressure to ‘snap out of it’s to ‘not be so ridiculous’…..Sometimes key figures say this, like my father-in-law at Christmas time (wch in-law visit-wise is a huge social-phobia/insomnia trigger for me) has NO insight into the stress that can take down a mind -he’s an ex-sergent major & does not even have any sympathy even for combat PTSD!!!!! (He has a V loud voice & in a way terrifies me) I, from my own childhood traumas have long lived with social anxiety & insomnia…..And these sort of people with zero sensitivity push up my pressure gauge & yes I want to say fk-em …and HAVE become so much more bold -even when crazily sleep deprived – but then give me the night and the blind fear reigns…. unless I can bring on a different state of mind, an attitude BEFORE the insomnia kicks in -but this, unless already there, is V difficult to switch over to……But honestly -we are the empathetic ones bcos wev lived thru this….Luckily my job is all about empathy….Thank God xx
