      Hello,

So after battling chronic insomnia for about 7 months where I was falling asleep fine, but once I woke up I was awake, I was finally able to implement/success at all of the things Martin has preached on here and through his emails about CBT-i. I was getting a solid 7+ hours a night. Felt great and then recently over the past week or so I got back in my head and developed a pre bed issue where right when I’d start to doze off I would get like a shock of alertness.. Great here we go again.. Last night I didn’t fall asleep until 4 a.m. which is very unlike me..

My question is for those of you have successfully got past this type of insomnia what CBT-i techniques did you find primarily helpful for this type of insomnia? I’m going to re-implement SRT and the things that helped. Thank you.

I’m so glad to hear how well you’ve been doing! That shock of alertness could be a hypnic jerk (in which case it might be a sign that sleep is trying to occur!) or it could simply be a symptom of heightened arousal (or both!).

I think that re-implementing sleep restriction might be helpful if you find yourself spending a lot of time awake during the night. If it starts to feel unpleasant to be in bed that can also be a good cue to get out of bed to do something relaxing and somewhat enjoyable until you feel calm and relaxed again. This can help prevent you from associating the bed with unpleasant wakefulness.

I hope this helps — how have you been getting on since you posted?
