      I haven’t read yet about perimenopause plus stress being a trigger for insomnia. With the perimenopause comes hot flashes, which definitely wake me up, then once they’re gone, it’s the stress where I can’t go back to sleep. I believe this is where it all started for me. My brain won’t shut off. Maybe 4 hours a night for 5 weeks now. I do get up however when I can’t sleep. It’s not helping at the moment. I’m suffering and depressed…

        There are as many triggers for insomnia as there are people in the world — however, there are only three ongoing causes of chronic insomnia:

        1. Homeostatic disruption (in other words, you are not sufficiently sleepy for sleep)
        2. Circadian disruption (usually caused by an inappropriate or irregular sleep schedule)
        3. High levels of arousal (this includes cognitive arousal, physiological arousal, and conditioned arousal)
