This is sort of a “cousin” to Restless Leg Syndrome, but it is NOT the same thing. My husband has experienced it for a number of years, but it has only recently started to bother me, as my sleeping has become more difficult the older I get.

It only happens when he's sleeping, never when he's awake. His legs will start to twitch and then continue at 20-30 second intervals, over and over again. I know he can't help it, but it's impossible for me to stay asleep when this is going on. According to what I've read online, these symptoms are typical, but there's not much that can make it stop.

Anyone else with experience with this?

        Hi Bobby,

I think many of us have experience with partners doing something that makes it hard for us to sleep – snoring being the classic example.

Have you considered sleeping in separate beds?

Maybe even just having 2 single beds with a 20 cm gap in between would help, cos you would not be feeling your husband moving around?

If you want to, feel free to join us in the “Insomnia 2013” thread.

The forum is a little quiet at the moment, so we're sort of gathered there and discussing everyone's sleep issues in one big muddle 🙂

        Welcome to the forum!

Hope you will find it very helpful!

Hi, Groggy. Thanks for your response. And I will admit 🙁 , yes, we have started sleeping in separate beds — which has really, really helped  . I just feel so guilty about it! But your reassurance has made me feel a lot better, and it certainly has not adversely impacted our, er, affection for each other. So that's a very good thing!!

          Thanks again.

            Hey Bobby,

I was just talking to a friend about the topic of “sleeping in separate beds” the other day and you would not BELIEVE how many couples do that these days!! I think 50% of the couples I know do this either on a regular basis, or “as needed”.

And it has nothing to do with not loving each other, or not having affection for each other, as you say 😉

I know in the past it was the kind of thing you couldn't admit socially, cos everyone would be like “Gosh, how awful, are you guys getting a divorce?!”

But thankfully that ridiculous notion is a thing of the past for many many people these days.

Nowadays people are just like “I want a good nights sleep. Whatever gets me and my partner that is totally FINE”

            I think that's a brilliant development!

Are your separate beds in separate rooms? Or would it be an option to do the “twin share” like in some hotel rooms?

I sleep separately from my boyfriend most nights.

We are always on the look out for the “nice” nights tho, where we are both relaxed and fall asleep entwined…

Thanks, Groggy! You have really made me feel better — plus I've shared your comments with my husband, and HE fees better too. This has certainly improved our attitude. I'm sure glad Martin “invented” this website!!

I believe that 'back in the day' only poor couples shared beds – the well-to-do would always have separate rooms.

Maybe we're going to end up going full circle…

Don't feel guilty – tell your husband you're just going back to your roots 😉
