Hi all, I'm Valerie, 42 years old, living in the Lower East Side, NYC. I've always had sleeping problems since I can remember but now my insomnia seems to have intensified over the past year. I'm sure it has to do with a myriad of things — getting laid off last June, trying to get myself back on track, reading way too much (I have the granddaddy of eReaders, the Sony eReader), my significant other keeps vampire hours (he works 4p-midnite shift). I'm sure getting an iPhone doesn't help either because I can still be “connected” lying in bed — if I'm not Facebooking, I'm Twittering or playing games.

Typically, I will fall asleep after dinner for a couple of hours, and then I'm up all nite. When I do sleep, it's never for more than 2 hours. The only thing that seems to help me sleep more is alcohol!

On FB, I've found that there are a lot of other insomniacs, but I'm glad to be part of an actual organized group. If we can't sleep, we might as well entertain each other!

Welcome to the gang, Valerie. You're not far from me – I'm just over the river in Brooklyn.

I have the pocket Sony Reader and absolutely love it (and I know one other member here who now has one, too)! I find I'm reading a lot more since I got it. When you get a spare moment, feel free to join in the conversation going on about recommended books over in the general conversation forum – we'd love to hear some recommendations from you.

Have you read our blog? We try to provide good information, but with a sense of humor – insomnia is depressing enough without our blog matching the theme. Who knows, it may offer you some relief, or at least some entertainment!

Facebook is great for networking with existing friends, but I think it's difficult to find new people who share a common interest and are open to welcoming new people into their group – that's why we have our own home right here. We can also share our personalities without fear of falling foul of the myriad of rules and regulations over at Facebook.

Anyway, I've rambled long enough – I look forward to getting to know you better and reading more of your contributions in the future.

Nice to meet you, Valerie! I just got the e-reader and am digging it so far.

Hi Martin, hi Lindsay – glad to see I have fellow e-Readers here…..I won't lie though, I envy those with a Kindle. Still too early to tell about the Nook. FYI, if you don't already know this, if you have a NY Public Library card, you can borrow books online to download to your e-Reader (the file will “expire” after 21 days). I will look for the thread re: recommended books and add some of my own soon. Ciao for now!

Yup, it's one of the reasons why I got the Sony. I don't pine for a Kindle – you can't buy books from elsewhere without converting them first, the files are full of digital rights management code and I don't like the fact Amazon can remove books from the Kindle at will, and monitor your reading habits.

I just want to read – the Sony does the job perfectly 🙂

Don't be afraid to post in other areas of the forum, Valerie!

You know what sucks, though? I bought e-books from B&N and they had the DRM so I couldn't load them onto the e-reader. I was super mad, but lesson learned. I'll get them from the sony store or google books from here out.
