I was thinking of posting some poetry here in the Writer's Corner… and searching through my archives, what 'ho! An untitled poem about insomnia.

Sleep, the little slices of death

The gales of my mind die and pale.

Redundant tunes in my ears grow silent

Prickles race down my limbs in urgency

To live and to animate restless muscles

To keep the slice of death at bay.

Eyes flutter, pupils widen and gape

Into the blackness beyond the window

      Searching for intangible, unfathomed things

Exploring for the sake of exploring itself

Determined to remain vigilant for no one

Frenetic to see me succeed, to not succumb.

On related note, the punctuation in this one serves purpose. The further the poem goes on, the farther each period is placed… this signifies the speeding up my mind does just when I think I'm about to doze off. Ah, insomnia, you crafty little rat.

I find it really interesting that you write about your body seeing sleep as being akin to death – hence the reason why it is so determined to keep it at bay; like a survival mechanism. Your sense of frustration (but understanding of this) really comes through in the poem, too.

I like how you played with the punctuation as well 🙂

Likening insomnia to death is something I've done for a long time now, thanks to a quote from Edgar Allen Poe that stuck in my head: “Sleep, those little slices of death; Oh how I loathe them.” I have a penchant for quotes. Haha!

It's good to hear such insight on it; I'm glad that frustration shines through. Thank you for taking the time to read it! I appreciate it.
