It has been 4 months since COVID and I’ve had insomnia since. I’ve never had this in my life and I’m really suffering. Anyone else dealing with post COVID insomnia? Are there any effective treatments out there?

I’m glad to hear you’ve recovered from COVID! It’s not uncommon for you to experience a temporary disturbance in your sleep when you have a sudden medical event occur but sleep usually returns once you’ve overcome the health issue. CBT-I is an evidence-based method that tackles the root causes of insomnia – our thoughts and behaviors toward our sleep. Have you explored implementing those techniques yet? What do you consider to be the biggest challenge with your sleep?

          Hi Scott,
Thanks so much for the reply. My biggest problem with sleep is staying asleep. I can fall asleep, but then wake up 3 or 3.5 hours later and IF I fall back asleep, it takes an hour or two. And then I might get another 1.5 hours of sleep. That’s a good night. On a bad night I never get back to sleep and go through the day on 3 hours of sleep. Your point about the virus clearing and then sleep should return is well taken. It’s very likely I’m going through long haul COVID and need to clear that before I can sleep well again. I saw a Naturopath doctor today who concurs with what you said. So now I’ve been put on a long haul COVID protocol and hopefully my good sleep returns. I’m not sure trying CBT-I would be effective right now if I’m still being inflicted with the virus. This is incredibly frustrating because you NEED DECENT SLEEP for the body to fully recover from COVID. Vicious circle

CBT-I works on the root cause of insomnia – our thoughts and behaviors toward our sleep issue.
It’s not unusual for us to wake multiple times during the night, especially as we transition from one sleep phase to the next, but they’re usually extremely brief and unnoticeable. Building a strong sleep drive throughout the day is vital to overcoming bedtime anxiety and nighttime awakenings. Are you following a sleep restricted window – if so, what is it? When these middle of the night awakenings occur, do you become anxious about it and worry about returning to sleep?
