      I’m in a terrible situation…
Since my hysterectomy(I’m young so it’s not hormonal)I can’t sleep, even with pain meds, I can’t get comfortable, and haven’t felt good in my skin since the surgery…the few day hospital stay made me feel dirty…
Before I had a very strict sleep hygiene routine…but that is no longer effective..
You name it I did it.

I was prescribed trazadone, it worked the first few nights, and now it’s having a paradoxical effect…I’m more awake..

      This is hurting my recovery…
Everything I learned in CBT-I is not working in this situation..
      HELP!
Any suggestions….I’m desperate, and exhausted…but so restless..
      I hate this!

I’ve already posted complaining about post operative insomnia..
I forgot to mention something that complicates it further..
Because the surgery was a hysterectomy..I now have super painful bladder spasms and I have to pee every 5 min..
I’m doing the pelvic floor PT, I’ve tried the meds(crazy side effects, no thanks)
And I don’t eat any of the foods you aren’t supposed to..and I haven’t had caffeine in 5 years prior.
I’m set to see a urologist, but it might be a while for that.

This makes post operative insomnia a million times worse..
        This is a nightmare..

Things sound really difficult for you right now. The thing about sleep is that as long as we give the body the opportunity to sleep, it will always generate — at the very least — the minimum amount of sleep it needs. The more we can remove ourselves from the process of trying to make sleep happen, the more likely it is for more than the minimum amount of sleep to happen.

I hope things improve with your recovery and that you are able to acknowledge the difficulties and challenges you are currently facing. Please be kind to yourself. It’s natural and normal for you to be finding things hard right now — because things are hard for you right now.

I have four more weeks off of work to get recovered, before I have to hit the ground running (competitive job) and I’m a top performer, much is expected of me…
I notice I’m taking a back slide on recovery with low quality to no sleep.
Pain returns, mobility gets worse(movement is key), complications arise.
And I refuse to take any more pain meds…I’m done..
Sleep is healing, or so I’m told.
And the pressure to come back better than before is high…I don’t even want to be off this long, as a matter of fact I’m trying to do things to heal quicker so I can come back early.
I’m certain these things are making it worse…but I’m not removing myself from the process of making it happen..
            Sleep hygiene is perfect..

So I guess what you are saying is my body will get so exhausted…it will all correct itself?
And I should be nice to myself? (I’m not that nice of a person, least of all to me)
I think that’s true…and I’ll have to give it some trust.
However I’m on a recovery time line here with my career…
Will the minimum amount of sleep be enough?

I think many of us could benefit from being kinder to ourselves when we’re experiencing pain and difficulty! Sometimes, the more pressure we put on ourselves to control what can’t be controlled (such as sleep, what we’re thinking, how we’re feeling) the more we might set ourselves up for struggle.

Yeah you are right..I can’t really control rate of healing or force rest..
So the plan is I’ll just accept what’s happening…
About 3 weeks left of recovery…and time off.
And it’s really slow going with no rest.
But it is what it is….it’s like one step forward two steps back..

I’ll go back to work no matter how I feel , and I’ll try for peak performance regardless of where I’m at sleep or pain wise..
                See what happens…
It’s probable that I’ll out perform no matter what..because I have before.
                And if I don’t…
                Maybe my company will understand..
Maybe some colleagues will enjoy watching me struggle..
                Maybe some will be kind..
I have to just go with the flow on this one..
