I have been struggling with insomnia on and off for five years now (more on than off). I gave birth to my first baby 3 months ago and the insomnia is now back with a vengeance. There is honestly nothing more frustrating than lying wide awake in bed beside your sleeping infant, tossing and turning and knowing that you will need to be awake soon anyway to feed them. In the past, I have tried sleeping pills, herbal supplements, pillow sprays, teas, white noise, sleepcasts, weighted blankets…you name it! I manage to shake the insomnia and then within a few months it returns and I spiral really quickly into despair. Any advice on how to manage this condition, especially with a small baby?

Congratulations on the birth of your baby! You aren’t alone in experiencing that postpartum insomnia, Hannah. Many people have shared their own experiences with it here in the forum, and it’s mentioned in more than one podcast episode!

It sounds as though the more you try to make sleep happen, the more you struggle, and the more difficult everything becomes. If that’s the case, it might be time to practice a new approach.
