I’ve been having insomnia for about 12 days which I feel has been triggered by a night of bad sleep. I also am 2 months postpartum and believe that my hormones are attributing to insomnia. Biggest challenge is feeling defeated at night when I can’t sleep and knowing I have an obligation to feed my baby at any hour with my lack of sleep.

        Hi Emily,

Welcome to the forum! Sleep disruption after having a baby can be expected but our sleep is usually restored once the baby begins to have a normal sleep pattern. If we begin to change our thoughts and behaviors toward our sleep when we experience a couple of nights of poor sleep, it can perpetuate the issue though. Are you going to bed when your baby is or only when you’re sleepy? When you’re awake, do you engage in activities that you enjoy or are you finding yourself battling unhelpful thoughts about sleep?

          Hello Scott,
Thanks for responding. I’m trying to sleep when my baby sleeps at 10pm but I find myself kicked out of any light sleep I get. I do try to get up when I lie in bed too long but there’s so much anxiety built in and also I AM tired (but my mind is wired). I don’t even find books that I read to be interesting because I have so much anxiety. Melotonin isn’t working and now doctor is prescribing a different sleep aid along with an antidepressant. I’m keen to get better with taking this course but recognize that my hormones are in flux and would like to have some rest to care for my baby.

The unpredictable schedule your newborn has could certainly be a contributing factor of your sleep issue, but I suspect, your anxiousness about the sleep disruptions could be perpetuating the issue. When you experience anxiety about your sleep, do you find yourself wanting to avoid or fight those negative thoughts? Since we can’t control our thoughts – when they arrive, the content, when they leave, etc – do you think there might be a better option that would bring more joy to our life than fighting our thoughts?
