    ✘ Not a client

After a few bad nights, I fell into a vicious circle. It takes me a long time to fall asleep, usually more than an hour. But what exhausts me the most are my thoughts, which I check to see if I fell asleep, right before I should fall asleep, the brain becomes aware of it and I return to the conscious state again. And so again and again. Is there a technique that could be used to regulate this? I always try to go to bed only when I’m sleepy, but even when I’m very sleepy, my thoughts about falling asleep don’t really let me.

I unfortunately know what you mean..I sometimes feel I have to be awake and conscious to realize I have fallen asleep and unconscious. Weird..I live my life. Get up same time erevryday etc. you can do it.

Thoughts themselves don’t usually consume a lot of energy. Some energy, yes — but not a great deal!

What can definitely consume A LOT of energy is trying to fight, avoid, or otherwise control our thoughts. Then we get tangled up in a battle with our minds, a battle our minds will always win. So, the battle continues until we are out of energy (and then the thoughts show up again).

How do you usually respond to the appearance of unwanted or unhelpful thoughts when they show up? Are you trying to battle them? Are you trying to get rid of them?

If so, have you tried practicing acknowledging them and allowing them to come and go as they choose instead? This is obviously easier said than done, but it’s an approach that might require less energy!
