      1. Do you think that I have such a hard time sleeping past 5 am in the morning might be that subconsciously I have been afraid that I would not wake up in time to work in the morning even though I set my alarm? I am retired now and still have this problem. I can wake up at 4 am and go back to sleep but cannot usually sleep past 5 am.

      2. I also worked a job where I had to be up at 4 am for 8 and 1/2 years and had to be at work by 5 am. Could this contribute to being awake at 4 am almost every day since then? I have worked 18 years at a different job since the one above. I have recently retired from this job but still continue to wake up at 4 am.

      3. Do you think because I am sleeping better in the earlier part of night / morning go to bed at 10 pm that might be why I can’t sleep past 5 am and should I get up then?

        1. Perhaps! And yet, you don’t need to know the answer to this because even with the answer, there’s nothing you can do with the answer — you can’t make yourself fall back to sleep when you wake and you can’t permanently delete certain thoughts and feelings from your brain. It’s all the effort we can put into sleep that makes it more difficult!

        2. As above. It might also be worth exploring why waking up at 4:00 AM seems to be an issue. What are you unable to do because you wake at 4:00 AM that you would be able to do if you woke up at 5:00 AM or 6:00 AM?

        3. Again, perhaps. It’s impossible to say for sure! Most people who don’t have any issues with sleep go to bed when they feel sleepy and get out of bed at a reasonably consistent time each morning — perhaps there might be an insight there?
