      hi!

i’m new to this forum and am excited to read about people’s experiences with insomnia. I started experiencing regular insomnia in college, and has persisted for the past 2-3 years. I don’t sleep poorly every night. Some nights I do get 7-8 hours of restful sleep. But some nights I get less than 5 hours of sleep. I normally don’t have much trouble falling asleep, but I often wake up at 3 or 4 a.m. and cannot fall back asleep. My main issue are racing thoughts about any and everything. I can’t seem to shut my brain off sometimes. I don’t know if the root of this is anxiety.

What has helped me the most is meditation when I can’t sleep. Since my problem is overthinking when it’s time to shut down, I find that listening to a sleep meditation helps me fall asleep. I’m also trying to change the way I think about sleep: not getting anxious when I can’t sleep, getting up instead forcing it, etc. I also finally bought black out curtains!

I would love to hear your experiences. As common as insomnia is, i don’t know many people who have consistent restless nights the way I do.

      Xoxo

Welcome to the forum and thank you for sharing your positivity! Meditation and other relaxation techniques can be a great way to calm a racing mind and help you prepare you for sleep.

It is worth mentioning that relaxation is a skill and does require practice, so it can take time for those new to relaxation techniques such as meditation to notice any improvement in their stress levels. It’s also worth being reminded that the ultimate goal of relaxation is relaxation — so it’s important to avoid approaching relaxation with the end-goal of better sleep.

Do you have any particular meditation techniques you’d recommend?

I listen to yoga nidra’s on YouTube. I recommend the longer ones so you have time to relax and clear your head before falling asleep. 🙂
