10 thumbs WAY up, or just up?
What did you think of Big Fish?

March 1, 2010 at 9:48 pm #9021Oddly enough I've not seen Big Fish, keep forgetting!
And the thumbs would be WAAAAAAY up! Awesome movie.
March 3, 2010 at 2:37 pm #9022I'm a huge Tim Burton fan… I liked Big Fish, it was really nicely done and still had the aesthetics of a Burton film but in an almost gentler way. It had a very storybook feel to it and I found the end genuinely touching.
I loved Sweeney Todd and visually it's stunning. It also happens to be one of my favourite musicals anyway. I think I prefer the stage version I saw and Johnny Depp looked the part but didn't have the voice necessarily to carry off all of Sweeney's songs although he has the presence. Thought the kid that played Toby stole the show actually.

I was not a fan of Sweeney Todd, and I love musicals, it just didn't seem appealing to me, odd.
I agree with you 1000% on Big Fish though, everyone I know who seen it hated it, even my friends who are huge burton fans, it's my favorite Burton movie.
March 3, 2010 at 3:41 pm #9024At the risk of being lynched, I am not a huge fan of Tim Burton. My wife is though – we even went to the Tim Burton exhibition at the MOMA here in NYC. I can definitely appreciate him as an artist, there's just something about the movies that don't work for me.
I was trying to explore this with my wife the other day, but I wasn't making much sense. I think the problem I have, is I enjoy reading books and interpreting them (the characters, the scenes) for myself – when I watch a Burton movie it's like watching someone's interpretation of a book, which doesn't work for me.
That probably still doesn't make much sense, but it's the best way I can explain it!
OK, now I'll run and hide!

No hiding! I know what you mean exactly.
I love Big Fish, and liked Nightmare before Christmas when I was a child, but honestly I don't consider myself a fan honestly since his work just is bland I find, I do appreciate him as an artist just everything he does just seems so boring, it's different than what everyone else does but it just seems like his work is hollow, to me it feels like he does what he does but isn't happy doing it or something.
One thing that ruined Nightmare Before Christmas was EVERYONE loves it now, it's the new thing to love, especially where I live, every girl who isn't popular loves it and they all got tattoos of it, even the ones who never seen it!
March 3, 2010 at 7:26 pm #9026Tattoos of it, huh? That's probably going to be a regret in a few year's time.
I like Tim Burton movies, personally, but if it doesn't appeal to me I won't rush out and see it just b/c Tim Burton made it.
March 3, 2010 at 7:52 pm #9027Books vs Films? I think it's unfair to compare two different mediums. With books you generally have one author and their imagination. But a film can have thousands of people all adding their contributions to tell the story.
That even goes for Zack Snyder and his team's attempt to put Watchmen on screen, even though the film may as well have been a slideshow of the graphic novel.
March 6, 2010 at 7:48 am #9028Has anyone seen Shutter Island?? Now THAT was a film!!!!
On Sweney Todd, I only really liked when they were singing lol. When the 'rads and I watch it, we only watch the singing parts.
Blind Side was good. Zombieland looked dumb and so did Avatar, so I didn't go and see them. Alice was booked out but apparently several people had spare tix & thought I'd already seen it (people always think I'm busy 😡 but I never am).
The books are usually better than the movies in my humble opinion, but the movies kind of enhance the books at the same time. Gives a visual.
March 7, 2010 at 7:09 pm #9029This weekend has been one of movies….I saw Alice in Wonderland yesterday, attended a preview screening of The Blind Side today…and I'm getting rid of a large amount of my DVD collection due to lack of space.
Alice in Wonderland – This is a good movie, but if you are going to see this expecting to see something akin to Disney's animated interpretation then stop right now. This movie is a sequel of sorts, Alice has grown up and returns to Wonderland. All the madcap characters are there like Dormouse, Hat Hatter and Red Queen and the characters work well in the movie.
For a 2 hour movie, the time really flies, and as much as I enjoyed it it still felt like there should have been more to it…and I'm not sure what exactly was 3D about it either…
The Blind Side was cool, I was able to get preview tickets to see this movie. It's about a woman who helps out a kid who is homeless and has awful grades…she gives him a room, clothes and feeds him and even becomes the kid's legal guardian. She helps his grades improve and gets him into American football.
You see a battle of the classes to a certain degree, but it is a really good story and I would have been moe than happy to have paid for tickets to see this movie, it is kinda sad and my flatmate got a bit weepy during the movie!
Good movies, but The Blind Side was most certainly the better of the 2.
March 9, 2010 at 10:16 pm #9030Shutter Island comes out this Friday in the UK and I'm quite looking forward to that. Also just got around to seeing 500 days of Summer this week. That was a lot better then I was expecting. I like Joseph Gordon-Levitt's work. Anyone see The Lookout? He was great in that.
March 10, 2010 at 5:10 am #9031I'm going to see Alice on Friday… taking the kids..ummm I will probably scare the beeejeebies out of them but I think it should be fun.

Shutter Island was AMAZING. Just saying 🙂
March 11, 2010 at 8:31 pm #9033I want to read the book for Shutter Island first – the trailer didn't really grab me, but I've heard really good things about the book.
Recently saw 'All about Steve' with Sandra Bullock – wow, I thought her performance in Speed 2 would be the worst of her career. I was wrong.
Last night my wife and I finally got around to seeing 'Precious' – it was a powerful film, but I wasn't sure it lived up to all the hype. Mo'Nique was excellent, though – and well deserving of her Oscar.

March 12, 2010 at 2:59 am #9034The book was decent for Precious, emotionally gripping, but idk if it transferred so well to screen. Course, I haven't seen it yet either.
(Shutter Island was an excellent book.)
