Hello guys, it’s not my first post here. You guys have helped me a lot. Right now I sleep really well and sleep is really not an issue for me. One key aspect which has helped me a lot is to have fixed wake up times. Currently I ALWAYS wake up at 08:30 am (with an alarm clock) and I usually go to sleep at 12 pm. It’s no problem if I go to sleep later for example if I go out with friends but I always try to wake up at the same time no matter how much or little I slept.

Now I want to shift my sleep schedule such that on a weekday I would like to wake up at 06:30 am and thus go to sleep at 10 pm. The problem with that is that I will probably not get a lot of sleep on weekends because it’s unlikely that I will go to sleep at 10 pm on weekends. So would it work if I woke up later on the weekends or is it mandatory that I wake up every day at the same time?

Would it be realistic to wake up on weekdays at 06:30 am and on the weekend at 10:00 am or is the difference between these waking hours just too big? Would waking up at 08:30 am on weekends be more realistic? And would it work to still go to sleep early on Sundays?

Moreover how would you recommend me to approach shifting my sleep schedule? I think I’d just like to change my schedule from one day to the other such that I would wake up at 06:30 am on weekdays. Or would you not recommend this approach?

Thanks in advance, you guys are great!

      Best regards,
      Momup

Hello @momup and welcome back! Haven’t heard from you in ages and it’s comforting to hear you are sleeping well.

Back to your queries, it’s quite likely your sleep will mess up a little bit. Hence it’s common to hear about people getting sunday night insomnia because they go to bed later and wake up later on the weekends compared to weekdays. But that’s life so the real question here is whether the weekend night life is worth losing some ZZZ over.

That said, it’s also impossible to tell how your body will respond to the new schedule until you actually do it. There is a chance you still sleep well on both weekdays and weekends despite the altered sleeping schedule anyway. Or even if you change nothing, you still get the occasional sleepless night. So why fret about it when you can’t control it? You should live your life as you want and not make sleep as the main consideration.

          Hey Chee,

thank you for your answer. It’s nice to hear that it’s possible to have these shifts and still sleep well. But just as you said, I have to experiment to know, I guess.

And thank you for reinforcing the idea that I should not take sleep as my main consideration and just live my life the way I want to live it. I have to see how I’ll exactly approach my schedule shift but I’ll keep the things you wrote in mind.

          Best regards,
          Momup
