I’ve had issues with sleep and have been on medication for 30+ years. I have been watching another really good YouTube channel for several months that has some great ideas on anxiety in general and insomnia. That helped my life quite a bit but I was still struggling and developed increasing sleep anxiety in past 2-3 months – with poor sleep 2-4x/week. Getting depressed and cutting back on normal activity so I could rest or nap in the afternoon.(it’s easy to do now that I’m retired.) Martin’s explanations were so clear and easy to understand- now I get it! (The importance of getting up at the same time, how to do sleep compression, why you shouldn’t nap, benefits of staying active during the day, not freaking out when i jolt awake just when I’m falling asleep, not giving too much attention to my wrist watch sleep data, etc) I understand some simple steps I can take. I’ve just had two nights of improved sleep, and I’m just already so encouraged! It feels good to have a plan! Thanks Martin!

I have had insomnia for about three months now. Total sleep anxiety, not sure how to deal with it now. I am 47 now and have been sleep well in my last 46 years. This is so sudden and I really feel out of control. Once my eyes are closed, I feel anxiety, and my heart rate is beating super fast. Of course, no matter how tired I am, sleep is out of window! Had a health check this week, everything is fine. But How do I deal with the sleep anxiety, Please help!

Ironically, the only way to cure sleep anxiety is to convince yourself you haven’t got one at all! It was all a hoax. The evidence for believing you have sleeping issues is rather weak. If you believe your sleep is broken, then how on earth did you get by in all those 46 years?? So now, suddenly in your 47th year, everything just stops working?? Deeply reflect on it, you can only “think” your way out of this, and not by doing stuffs which will not only not help you find any relief but further entrenches you in the horrendously mistaken belief that something about your sleep is terribly wrong.

Thank you tessishere – I’m doing a lot better but still have a way to go. I did the Insomnia Coach 2 Wk free course and it made a huge difference!! I am considering one of the paid programs when I get enough confidence built up that I am ready to start decreasing medication under my
dr’s care of course. I am at a point of getting 1 – 1/2 hrs less than I used to always get before the last insomnia relapse a few months ago. I’m pretty tired during the afternoon. But I am going right to sleep and straight through until my established wake up time. I’ve had a few set backs, like 2x this week I woke up 45 min early. But now I know that sets backs are normal and I don’t get so freaked out.

I’m also dealing with long, entrenched anxiety thought patterns that I’ve evidently had for many years. That will take time to overcome. For example, I am already having some anxiety that if I don’t get enough sleep, I might get sick, and then I can’t visit my grandkids for Easter. Of course, with that type of thinking, it could cause my insomnia to get worse because I’m so focused on sleep!! So I am working on changing my thought patterns.
