I developed sleep anxiety many times. I’ve overcome it many times. I tried not to react to the activities of my brain when I was anxious. However, the last two nights, it hasn’t helped. I felt my heart beating faster and faster. It was very frustrating to feel awakened by myself. I’m so frustrated and a little scared of a downward spiral.

Don’t fight it. Be willing to entertain worst case scenarios. Yes, expect a downward spiral. What’s the worst that can come from it? Confront your fears head-on and not choosing to escape them everytime. That’s how you truly recover.

Frustration and fear is natural and normal — and, every time it shows up you have the opportunity to practice responding to it in a more workable way. A way that might involve less struggle, less effort, and less battling. After all, your experience probably tells you that fighting this difficult stuff doesn’t make it any easier, right?

            Thanks for the replies.
I did sleep fine last night. But my anxiety is still little higher today. It seems that because I slept fine, There’s more at stake. I’m worried I’ll somehow resist and lose it all.

It sounds as though you picked up a big insight there — that, even in the presence of anxiety, sleep can still happen.

The lingering worry and anxiety you described is natural and normal — that’s your brain doing its job and looking out for you. Luckily, you get to choose how to respond to those thoughts and feelings!

                Thanks Martin!
Last night I got this anxiety attack again. Waves of anxiety that wouldn’t stop coming. I can’t stop negative thoughts from bubbling up like what if it will always be like this? What if it will never stop coming?
This morning I feel I can kind of cope an accept, but the worry is still there shaking in the background: what if it won’t stop!

Nobody can delete thoughts from their brain — they’ll always come back, no matter what we do. Perhaps trying to stop thoughts (and maybe labeling thoughts as either positive or negative) might be creating some struggle?

Worry and anxiety are normal human feelings and emotions. They are important, too. None of us would be alive today without them. We don’t need to fight them — and such a fight would be futile, anyway!

What we can do is practice responding to them in a more workable way; a way that doesn’t involve struggle. A way that helps us continue to move toward the life we want to live, even when they’re present.
