I’m enjoying this program, but I’m waiting for the punchline…’Sleep Deprivation and how it will help you sleep.’ I’ve done a Sleep Deprivation program and it wasn’t easy. I did have some short term success but I really don’t want to do it again. Has anyone else had the same experience?

I will be starting a sleep deprivation program soon when I start my CBT-i classes this week. But it seems to me it would be hard for me as my sleep is not continuous. I wake up and have periods of non-sleep during the night. So if I do a 5.5 hour window, which is the least I can do, my 4.5 to 5.5 hours of sleep I am getting may fall within a 6.5 to 7.0 hour window. I am therefore cutting off some of the time I would be sleeping. This does seem counter-intuitive but I will give it a shot.

Welcome to the forum, Barbie. What kind of ‘sleep deprivation’ program have you done? I am hoping you are not going to tell me that you tried sleep restriction (a core component of CBT-I) because that doesn’t involve depriving you of sleep (even though the terminology implies this).

Instead, it reduces the amount of time you spend in bed to more closely match the amount of time you spend asleep in order to consolidate sleep. This leads to better sleep quality and helps you relearn to associate the bed with sleep rather than wakefulness.
