I have been struggling off and on for years with sleep issues. I am on antidepressants and also have been taking Ativan at night to help me get back to sleep. Without it I honestly don’t think I’d go back to sleep. Problem being it takes more and more now as my body is becoming immune from it and I know it’s not good to stay on indefinitely. I used to take amytripiline which worked great for years. I just ask myself what is worse being dependent on these pills or going through life like a zombie? Right now my problem is going to bed and falling asleep but waking up a few hours later. I try switching beds and sleeping in a cool room. I read. Put on soothing spa music or the fan for background noise. I try the slow breathing techniques but unfortunately only the pills end up winning. I can’t stand getting up in the morning and not feeling rested. Puts me in a very bad mood and sitting in front of a computer all day and trying to concentrate is torture. What I would give to go to bed and get at least 7 hours straight sleep. I need to try something!

First, it’s important to recognize that you will sleep without medication if you are awake for long enough! We never lose our ability to sleep and our biological sleep drive never goes away. If we are awake for long enough, we will sleep.

When do you currently go to bed at night, when do you get out of bed to start your day, and roughly how many hours of sleep do you get on a typical night?
