i never had a problem sleeping until I suffered a trauma both mentally and physically at age 28. I subsequently moved away a few months later as was expected in, nor hindsight, a very fragile state. Sleeping probs began. Became very depressed which led me to leave the country for college where all the stress worsened everythjng. I have tried valerian tablets and teas. Burning sage like an idiot, always still exercise, kalms and any herbal tablets, yoga, Pilates, lavender obviously. My insomnia got so bad at one point I turned to alcohol purely just to sleep and this led to self harm. I just want to be able to put my head down and fall asleep. Any help appreciated.

May 2, 2019 at 11:00 pm #28826Welcome to the forum, Greenday1 — and I am sorry to read about your past trauma and your current problems with sleep.
Can you tell us a bit more about your current sleep pattern? When do you normally go to bed at night, when do you get out of bed in the morning, and roughly how many hours of sleep are you getting on a typical night?
Do you tend to have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or both?

May 4, 2019 at 12:45 am #28886I tend to go to bed at 11 ish coz my boyfriend goes then but I won’t sleep until 5/6 so I end up getting out of bed and the couch is becoming my bed. He has sleep apnoea which doesn’t help but not the problem. But I’m so so so so tired! In need of help coz I don’t want to take medication and I’m lost. I feel like I’ve done everything!!!!!
May 4, 2019 at 12:56 am #28888I think we have uncovered a starting point here — you should only go to bed when you feel sleepy enough for sleep. If you go to bed before you are sleepy enough for sleep (for example, because your boyfriend is going to bed) you are only going to be lying in bed awake and this is going to perpetuate the problem.
It’s also important to sleep only where you want to be sleeping for the long-term. If sleeping in your bed is your long-term goal, that’s the only place you should sleep (in other words, you should avoid sleeping in the couch unless this is your long-term goal).

I hope this helps!

May 4, 2019 at 1:11 am #28891Trouble is I can go about a week and work 12 hour shifts and people think I’m drunk (I don’t drink or take anything btw) and then I crash for a few days. It’s really affecting my life. I’ve tried the mildest of sleeping tablets. Hypnosis, homeopathy, exercise, I work in health care. I’ve tried everything!!!!

May 4, 2019 at 11:37 pm #28924You mentioned that you have tried everything — but have you tried only going to bed when you feel sleepy enough for sleep (rather than going to bed just because that’s when you boyfriend goes to bed)? Have you tried not sleeping on the couch? Have you tried following a regular (and appropriate) sleep window? Have you tried implementing any cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) techniques?
In your most recent reply, you mentioned that you work shifts — this is a big insight that was not mentioned in your opening post. Do your shifts regularly change? What kind of various shifts do you work? Shiftwork has a huge impact on sleep since it can prevent the body from following a regular sleep/wake cycle.

May 5, 2019 at 1:55 am #28930I’m currently not working because of my lack of sleep! I can’t put my finger on it. I go to bed with my boyfriend always at the same time but his apnoea doesn’t help. I have lots of stressers in my life
May 5, 2019 at 12:55 pm #28931Please consider signing up for Martin’s program. CBT-I works! My insomnia started months after 2 tragedies occurred in my family. My husband is a snorer was well. I was trying to do this in my own, sleeping on the couch etc. I became very depressed. I’ve done another online course, but Martin’s personal email support has been invaluable. There is hope for you in this program. It’s not easy, but it works. Praying for you.
