I have huge issues falling asleep. I spend most of the day thinking about the night. It preoccupies me and robs me of feeling happy or normal. I was diagnosed with generalised anxiety disorder a few years ago so I recognise that anxiety has a huge part to play. Yet, knowing what’s causing the problem does help much with finding the solution. I fear the effects of not sleeping which creates more anxiety which fuels further insomnia. And so the viscous cycle continues. I am sure many people will relate to this scenario and I would be delighted to hear how others have tackled and hopefully resolved the same issue.

      In hope…

Welcome to the forum, James. I am sorry to hear about your struggles with falling asleep. Many people with chronic insomnia spend a lot of time thinking about sleep, being preoccupied with sleep, obsessing about sleep, and even catastrophizing about sleep. So, you aren’t alone and there is certainly nothing unusual in what you are experiencing.

First, let me reassure you that you can sleep, that there is no evidence that chronic insomnia causes any health problem, and that the body does a good job at compensating for lost sleep by itself.

Are you currently being treated for your anxiety? Have you looked into cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I)?

If you are ready to stop struggling with insomnia you can enroll in the online insomnia coaching course right now! If you would prefer ongoing phone or video coaching calls as part of a powerful three month program that will help you reclaim your life from insomnia, consider applying for the Insomnia Mastery program.
