Welcome to the forum, James. I am sorry to hear about your struggles with falling asleep. Many people with chronic insomnia spend a lot of time thinking about sleep, being preoccupied with sleep, obsessing about sleep, and even catastrophizing about sleep. So, you aren’t alone and there is certainly nothing unusual in what you are experiencing.
First, let me reassure you that you can sleep, that there is no evidence that chronic insomnia causes any health problem, and that the body does a good job at compensating for lost sleep by itself.
Are you currently being treated for your anxiety? Have you looked into cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I)?
