Hi everyone, so I have decided to have a go at joining an insomnia forum to see if there is anyone else out there with similar experiences. I know, it’s 21:00 and we shouldn’t be on screens this late but here goes. Around 3 years ago (around turning 40) I had a dreadful nights sleep…pretty much zero sleep, then a second night, and third and so it continued for about a week. It then became quite normal to only get 3 hours a night, with at least 1 or 2 nights a week with less again. It has got to a point where I don’t know if I dream or I am thinking things. The strange thing, is that I don’t feel tired. If I have a couple of drinks, then I become absolutely shattered and can’t keep my eyes open and have to go to bed. This only happens with alcohol. I don’t have too much of an issue most of the falling asleep, but can’t stay asleep for more than a couple of hours. It feels like my body has got used to this, however my memory seems to be getting worse. Long gone are the days where you would fall asleep and then wake 6 hours later and feel it went so quickly. I have tried zopiclone, but it doesn’t really work. I suppose my question is, can this kind of insomnia be caused from an underlying medical problem, or is it psychological.

      Thanks

      Russ

        Hello Russ-

Yea I remember 22 hours ago and looking at all the devices

and everything else NOT to do before we make another effort.

At 53 your age kind of sounds where it became more than just

saying I am not sleeping as well as I was before.  I have been here

about a week now, the best thing I have found is a more positive

attitude. But like sleep it does not last.  Then as say you get a few

nights and back to the start again?  You are the 3rd person (so far)

that relates the not feeling tired, my mind seems to better and my

body cant run well on 3 hours or less a night. Counting time is another

no-no, and since 4/15/18 I have done well, but not a lot of help.

Assume I have tried enough different medications as well.

I came here because the guy I buy my grass from was worried for

me, my doctor is easy with SP but tolerance is winning.

        I hope this helps?  Yes, I know I have not suggested anything;

wait till Martin responds to you.

I went from 156 hours with no sleep. Then over 5 days I got

3-2-2-2-3 and now we are somewhere around zero again, but

I am not to suppose to be counting!

As I sit and wait for someone else out there that knows how it

feels.  I would welcome a bad dream or a seizure for sleep.

I know how that sounds, but desperation is rough as well.

Welcome to the forum, Russ. Have you spoken to your doctor about CBT for insomnia (or tried any of the techniques)? You mention that when you drink alcohol you find it easy to fall asleep but find your sleep is disrupted during the night. This is actually a normal response to alcohol.

Although alcohol can make it easier to fall asleep, it makes it harder for us to stay asleep during the night. That’s because, as the body processes alcohol, it actually creates a stimulant effect. The result is, we wake more often during the night, and we can find it much harder to fall back to sleep when we wake.

Although I can’t say whether your insomnia is caused by a medical problem (only a doctor can make such a diagnosis), it is far more likely that your insomnia is being perpetuated by your thoughts and behaviors — and these can usually be successfully addressed using CBT-I techniques.
