      Hello there everyone,

In the last couple of months or so, my sleep patterns have been disturbed dramatically.

I recently finished managing the renovation of my dad’s property which i have now moved into. This took 4 months whilst i was living in my own flat. I would work 4 days a week then spend one day a week doing my dad’s house. Slept around 7 hours a night prior to this.

The sleep pattern disruptions started one night in the flat after a bad dream and a panic attack creating anxiety. This went on for a week on and off but the residual effect appears to be the insomnia.

It was ok for a couple of weeks then the sleepless nights came in again, kept increasing and now I’ve had 3 days without proper sleep. It’s almost like the brain is saying ‘i dont want to switch off for 6 hours! No way!’ This is a real struggle. How do i stop this? I’ve tried meditation etc. but no luck. How do i change that brain attitude?

I take supplements sometimes which contain Melatolin. These are a bit hit and miss.

So really i just wanted to share what I’m currently going through and see if there is a way through this as I’m finding it difficult. It could be getting used to being in ny my dad’s house but these problems were already materialising at the flat.

I exercise twice a week, blood pressure fine. Weight fine although I’ve lost a bit due to this. It’s just that at night my head tenses up almost like it’s ready not to sleep although i feel tired.

I hope the above makes sense and thank you for giving me the opportunity to air my problem.

      Regards

      Huj

Hello Huj and welcome to the forum. Nothing you have described sounds unusual, in that you experienced sleep disruption due to an external event (a bad dream followed by a panic attack and anxiety) and this led to worry about sleep, thinking a lot about sleep, trying remedies for sleep, and perhaps introducing other compensatory behaviors.

Unfortunately, sleep-related thoughts and behaviors are the drivers of insomnia and perpetuate the problem. Usually, for short-term sleep disruption the best thing to do is continue with your day and your routine as though nothing is wrong with your sleep — leave sleep to recover by itself and it will usually do so. The more involved we become, the harder it is for sleep to get back on track.

When do you currently go to bed at night, when do you get out of bed to start your day in the morning, and roughly how many hours of sleep are you currently getting on a typical night?

          Hi Martin,

It varies but is can be 3-4 hours a night. I was a really good sleeper before this.

I tend to go to be around 8.45 to 9, nod off sometimes then get up again, or don’t get any sleep till say 1 in the morning and then get up again around 3 or 4. It’s been a dramatic change. What can I do? I try and switch off at night as well but to avail.

I’ve also subscribed to your e-mails as well.
