I have stopped all the things that “help you sleep” and completely relaxed about my sleep. I sleep longer but the quality is poor and I’m exhausted by 3pm. Anyone else like this?

Yes!… Feeling sleepy is a surefire sign that your sleep system is working perfectly. Try to reframe your thoughts about sleep and how you feel during the day. Sleep isn’t an on-off switch, it’s more like a dimmer whose input is dependent on so many things like your energy levels, your feelings, whether you are bored, when and what you eat and a myriad of other factors! It’s impossible to pinpoint why you feel exhausted. Ironically it always seems to happen around the same time for most people. Hence, the afternoon siesta!

Hey Pomac, 2 things that completely improved the quality of my sleep (as in feeling relatively well rested with 5h of sleep) are: have dinner at least 4h before going to bed, and no alcohol for dinner. You may need to keep coffee and tea for the morning as well. Experiment with those 3 things and see how it goes.

Pro tip: if you have a heart rate monitor (I use a Garmin forerunner 245 smartwatch) that measures your stress level when you sleep (by means of the heart rate variability), you can check the effect of the above measures every morning on your smart-watch 😉

Hello Pomac! If your sleep quality was better, what would you be doing differently? What are you unable to do now that you would be doing if you were getting the type of sleep you’d like to be getting?
