Hello, I’m wondering if sleep restriction therapy is recommended during pregnancy. Because my average number of hours of sleep is just under 5, I allot 5.5 to 6 hours in bed. I’ve been doing this for years, though occasionally my average improves and I am able to allot up to 7 hours in bed. Now that I am planning to get pregnant, I wonder whether it is better to get rest whenever I can ie with naps etc. Taking short naps seems to help me feel less pressure to sleep at night. So that I don’t fully fall asleep during naps, I hold my keys and if I drop them, I know that I need to wake up.

Unfortunately I can’t give you a straight answer because research in this area is lacking. A 2015 article in Obstetric Medicine wrote that:

CBT has been shown in nonpregnant patients to be safe, as effective as and more durable than sedative medications but data in pregnant women is lacking.

No specific mention was made about sleep restriction so I would suggest talking to your doctor about this.
