I know it is important to follow the sleep rules, but what happens when you are sick? Can you stay in bed or not? Can you go to bed early or sleep in late? Do the rules change if you are sick? Any thoughts?

      Thanks,

      Lynda

        Hi Lydia

I've just had the same problem and have decided on a compromise: keep getting up at 5 a.m., as per my sleep schedule (this gives me time to sit in front of a daylight lamp and also to inhale steam for treating the cold etc before going to work), but I am going to bed earlier, as I think that interrupted sleep is pretty inevitable when feeling rough. I'm still keeping the total time in bed to under 6.5 hours in the hope that it'll keep some of the benefits of my initial severe sleep restriction going. Can't tell yet if this was the right decision. What did you decide to do in the end?

My suggestion would be that if you are sick, you listen to your body and get as much rest as possible.

The main goal of sleep scheduling is to help build sleep pressure/sleep drive and to strengthen the association between the bed and sleep. When you’re sick, priorities change — so listen to your body and rest in bed if you need to. Sleep scheduling can resume when you feel better!
