I have been struggling with sleep for 5 years (almost exacting since menopause). While hormone changes may have triggered initial insomnia, it has persisted much longer than I expected. While I have implemented many techniques and tips, the one obstacle remaining is shutting down my mental focus on sleep when I go to bed. No matter how I try to distract my brain (visualization, counting etc), thoughts of sleep performance always pop in which prevents pure relaxation. Any new ideas on how to train ones brain to not focus on sleep?!

Five years of struggle is really tough. It sounds as though your experience might be telling you that trying to distract your brain or trying to fight/avoid certain thoughts isn’t proving to be an effective strategy. If that’s the case, how is that strategy currently helping you?

How might things be different if you didn’t put quite so much energy and effort into trying to control your brain?
