      Dear Martin and community,

I’ve had insomnia for 9 months. I was getting 2 to 3 hours of sleep. With help of a cbt-i and Martins course (which has helped me in so many ways and allayed my fears, helping me to live my life and has given we so much hope and confidence), I still have not filled my 6 hour sleep window. I guesstimate I am getting 5 hours sleep. This isn’t enough to make me feel refreshed. I’m still heavy eyed and tired most days.

My question is, is it possible my sleep duration will increase in time? I wake early and don’t fall back to sleep. I’m not anxious but calm and happy to lie there until alarm goes off. Just looking for reassurance, I guess, that even after 9 months, sleep duration can improve.

      Thank you everyone.

Yes people often improve even after their cbti course has ended.

Very often, it is when you no longer think about it as much. You are no longer chasing a target. Life takes hold and other things take precedence. Sleep just fades into the background and a perceived lack of it is no longer considered an imminent threat or danger. You just move on with your life and become preoccupied with other things.

Thank you so much @Chee2308 for replying and for such a welcome insight. This makes perfect sense and gives me encouragement. Sometimes I just need a ‘nudge’ to remind me. By asking such questions I guess I am still chasing that target, although I kid myself I’m not. Thank you again.

Sleep duration might increase and it might not. Sleep takes care of itself!

Let’s say that you were getting the exact amount and type of sleep you wanted to get every single night — what would you then be doing differently with your life?

That kind of question could help expand the focus of your attention away from sleep (something you can’t control) and toward actions (something you can always control) and the real reason(s) why you want sleep to be a certain way.

            I hope there’s something useful here 🙂
