I had one parathyroid gland removed last week. One thing it did was cause insomnia, because of high blood calcium, from the overactive parathyroid gland. Now that it’s out, I am still having trouble sleeping. Am I just expecting it to happen as it always has? Tried some magnesium, valerian root, theanine, and gaba, with melatonin-sometimes works, sometimes no. Really do not want to take OTC sleep aids. Any suggestions?

Hi Robin. My father had his parathyroid removed last summer ago due to kidney disease, so I know a little bit of what you’re talking about. He had weekly blood tests and lots of monitoring for months, but again, he has a lot going on medically. Just me, but I’d think you’d want to work with your doctor before trying any sort of med.

If you’re here, you probably have been looking into CBT-I. Have you done Martin’s free two-week email course? It’s great, and he advocates “no pills” ways to address insomnia.

          Hi Robin,

Welcome to the forum! It’s not too surprising you haven’t found medication helpful since pills don’t generate sleep and don’t assist with the perpetuation of your sleep disruption. Are you having a difficult time falling asleep, staying asleep or both?
