Developed insomnia in mid 30s then learned I had a autoimmune hyperactive thyroid disorder (Grave’s). Subsequent treatments for that and eventual ablation of the thyroid gland has led to long-term sleep dysfunction. Now in my mid 60s, I can honestly say I have not slept more than 5 hours at a stretch for 30 yrs., usually waking around 2:00-3:00 a.m. and if I’m lucky, fall back to sleep for another 2-3 hours. Surprisingly, I’m in reasonably good health for my age, but lack vitality and stamina. I have anxiety and depression, possibly from not sleeping, but maybe other things in my life. It has not been a happy journey. I have a regular meditation practice and follow a course in miracles teachings, but sadly hasn’t lead to better sleep. I live in a senior community and almost everyone I meet (women mostly) has the same problem. We all share our aggravation and concern about not sleeping through the night. Everyone has a remedy to share, which usually is temporary. We all long for the days when we would close our eyes at night and wake up refreshed in the morning after a solid 8 hours of sleep. Are those days gone forever?

Not many people in their 60s get eight hours of sleep — as we get older, we naturally generate less sleep at night. That’s not to say we should be satisfied with five hours of sleep — I simply mention this so we don’t have any unrealistic expectations when it comes to how much sleep we should be getting!

What time do you usually go to bed at night, and what time do you usually get out of bed to start your day in the morning?
