I've been a chronic insomniac for over 15 years now, diagnosis adjusted to delayed sleep phase syndrome with co morbid ADHD last August. Sleep has been a struggle for me for so long that I can actually remember individual instances of sleeping well vividly because of their rarity. I'm a little like an old farmer talking about the superstorm back in the day in that regard.

In January of this year I purchased a sunrise simulating alarm clock. It didn't help me get to sleep earlier, but it made a lot of difference in being able to wake up on time and improve my punctuality at work. Rather than being late 5 days of the week, I managed to improve that to2-3 times. Still a concern, but the obvious improvement took some of the pressure off with my boss, who's actually been very understanding about this whole mess.

Then in February, I was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder and prescribed Lamictal. Since starting the Lamictal, after an initial blip of severe insomnia lasting 2-3 days, I've been able to improve my sleep initiation time as well. I've gone from ~2-3 am sleep time to 12-1am and those two hours have made so much difference in my mood and functionality.

i don't know if this will be helpful to anyone here, but maybe as something to bring up with your doctor?

That's really interesting on the sunrise simulation alarm clock – I've been looking at them for a while and was wondering whether anyone here had any experience with them. They often go on discount at Amazon. Are you able to rely on the light or do you need the backup alarm too for waking you up in the morning?

I'm glad to hear your sleep has been improving – any improvement proves that you are capable of sleep; just keep at it, and it will only continue to improve!

I am trying to avoid the drugs. How is your sleep now? Is it still good? Are you still taking the pills?
