So a few days ago, I developed what’s called a sensorimotor OCD.. It started with these damn masks they make us wear in supermarkets.. Needless to say, it made me really focus on my breathing especially at night.. It’s manageable during the day because I have diversions/distractions, but man, at night it’s causing me all kinds of sleep anxiety.. I know I suffocate or anything.. When we hyperventilate, we actually have too much air in us, so I’ve been told it’s best to take short drawn out breaths when anxious.. It’s just the OCD of thinking about it really effecting me.. I’ve needed hydroxyzine to knock me out 2 of the last 3 nights.. Last night, I was lucky to get 2 hours of sleep.. Anyone else deal with this and have any tips on how to deal with it?

The more we intently focus on something that happens without any conscious thought (such as breathing or even walking) the more difficult that very thing often seems to feel!

So, in your example, it might be helpful to simply get out of bed and distract your mind with a somewhat enjoyable activity any time you find yourself paying too much attention or worrying about your breathing.

Getting out of bed will also help prevent you from associating your bed with unpleasant wakefulness.

          I hope this helps!
