Hi forum, I am a newbie and have just registered.

Been suffering extreme hyper arousal with sleep over a few years. I did four months of CBT-I, which didn’t help as my anxiety got worse with the sleep restriction therapy. I have tried multiple anti-depressants and sleep pills but these haven’t helped.

Made changes to diet and lifestyle with strict sleep hygiene. I can fall asleep easily, but wake up an hour to two hours after I fall asleep then I am wired all night. In all I get around 2 hours a night and its starting to wear on me. I have come around to accepting I cant sleep, but the sleep wont return and I feel like I am stuck in a loop.

      Has anyone any tips?

The best tip is just don’t do anything else except going to bed at regular times. Insomnia will resolve itself if you just leave it alone. Trust yourself and the process. Good luck.

@chee2308 I wonder whether insomnia resolves itself or is it just a very long recovery…

The answer is very subjective. Because insomnia itself is very subjective and personal. Insomnia is essentially a problem of your own definition. You think sleeping anything less than X hours, you automatically think you have insomnia. On the other hand, another person sleeps 4-5 hours but doesn’t think there’s a problem, therefore he doesn’t have insomnia.

              Welcome to the forum, @Vivian507!

You might be new here, but you are not new to insomnia. You’ve been on a journey. You’ve been through a lot and you’ve learned a lot.

Typically, if we feel we are caught in a loop it’s because what we are doing isn’t working but we continue to do the same thing over and over again because we don’t know of any alternatives.

Your experience seems to have taught you that you cannot make sleep happen through effort and you cannot permanently delete anxiety (or any other thought or feeling) from your brain.

You also know that you can always control your actions. And, that’s where the power is.

When you wake during the night (which is a normal part of sleep), how do you currently respond and what have you been learning from that response?

                Hi Martin

                Thank you for your response

I have given up on sleep efforts and have learned to accept not sleeping. When I wake up I sometimes put on my laptop and watch a TV Series. I never get out of the bed as its too much stress and made me worry way too much on whether I was going to fall back asleep again, it sent me into panic mode.

Sometimes I lie there until my alarm wakes and get up around the same time. I don’t track my sleep or check the clock (laptop has no time or I dont go on my phone). Its been three years now and I don’t see any progress but the lack of sleep and severity as taken its toll on my health so I have been back to my GP to get back on Zopiclone.

The sleeping pill is the only thing that can help me get full nights sleep so its my only option right now

Your experience seems to be telling you that the more you try to control, fight, or avoid certain thoughts and feelings the more powerful and difficult they become. It also seems to suggest that the more you try to make sleep happen (or the more you crave it and chase after it), the more difficult that can become, too.

If zopiclone is giving you full nights of sleep, what makes sleep an ongoing problem?
