I have been analysing how my insomnia started and came to a POSSIBLE conclusion that it might be caused by a severe prolonged stress for several months. I don’t have those stress factors now. But insomnia is constant for many years. Who has insomnia caused by a strong stress in thr past? How did you resolve your insomnis?

You could very well have identified the initial cause of your insomnia. Most cases of insomnia are triggered by a specific event or period of stress. A few examples might be a work promotion, getting fired, studying for exams, or relationship changes. It is perfectly normal for sleep to be disrupted at times like this. However, what can happen is when the stressor goes away, the sleep problem remains.

This often happens because when our sleep is initially disrupted, we begin paying far more attention to our sleep than we ever did before. In addition, we often implement behaviors to try to improve our sleep that can actually make sleep worse (one example would be spending too much time in bed).

The good news is that cognitive and behavioral techniques will help address the sleep-related thoughts and behaviors that are harming sleep. Have you looked into CBT for insomnia by any chance?

          Hi Martin,

This is me, Elena. I was talking to you by email. And I wrote you that I tried CBT-I with sleepio program. I couldn’t implement the sleep restriction into my routine. Because I can’t sleep for a few nights in a raw! Which mekes me exhausted. I literally spend all my days in a bed. So awful I feel without sleep. I started to feel so awful without sleep after psychotropic drugs for years. The latter destroyed all biochemistry in my brain. And I have no idea how to restore it. Other ideas from CBT-I I’m doing fine.

What can you advice me in this hard case? It would be VERY NICE yo get your ideas!

          Elena

I would like to find a doctor that specializes in CBT-I. I asked my psychiatrist and they have psychologists on staff and didn’t know anyone that specializes in CBT related to sleep. What’s the best way to find one? Just search for a sleep specialist? I wasn’t sure if “sleep specialist” implies that they’re also familiar with CBT techniques. Any recommendations for how to find someone?

Elena — If you are spending all your days in bed, then you are not implementing CBT-I correctly. It is important to note that core CBT techniques such as sleep restriction and stimulus control are not intended to work on the first few nights. They are designed to work over time by breaking the association you have created between the bed and wakefulness, stress, worry, and anxiety. Because of this, it is essential that the techniques are implements consistently. This requires a significant amount of commitment and support. If you go through a course that doesn’t offer one-on-one, personalized support, it is a lot harder to stick with the techniques until you get to the stage where you see improvements in your sleep.

Mark — My Insomnia Coach course uses CBT techniques to improve sleep and graduates get great results.

Although I am not a doctor, I do hold a master’s degree in health and wellness education, I am a certified health education specialist and I am also certified in clinical sleep health. My credentials are recognized by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).

My course uses the same techniques as those implemented in face-to-face therapy sessions but at a significantly reduced cost.
