Hi I’m a 28 year old mom of two boys with lots of energy. I’ve struggled with insomnia since I was super young about eight. I think sometimes childhood traumas can be a huge factor in insomnia. Sometimes I go to sleep fine but am wide awake around 3am ish other time s like now unfortunately I might skip a whole night or two without sleep. I’m exhausted but my mind  won’t shut off. Does anyone have any advice. I know this is not good for the body

Hi Mia!  I am also a mom and understand what you are going through.  I never had major sleeping problems until my oldest wast born.  Being a mom is very stressful.  I understand how the mind doesn’t shut off.  I worry about being a good enough mom, about keeping them healthy, etc.  I know I worry and lot and I’ve been told I’m a very sensitive person.  My sleep ends up suffering as a result.  Its hard when you are so tired but still can’t sleep.   Have you talked to someone about your trauma?

Sorry to hear about your struggles, Mia. When you wake at 3am, do you know why you wake at night? What do you think is preventing you from falling back to sleep after waking during the night?

I did go through counseling as a teen a couple years , but tend to avoid the past issues. It’s triggering. I realize though more and more thats where my insomnia stems from.  Nightmares waking me up or the mind being on alert at night when theres no reason to be scared my husband is a big guy and he’s right next to me sleeping at night. But the mind keeps going and going then I gotta keep checking on the doors making sure they are locked and checking the boys window because im so worried somebody could steal them . It’s over the top I know.

Its not over the top.  Don’t feel bad about your feelings.  People deal with traumas in different ways.  And when it comes to our kids its hard not to be neurotic.  Some of the things I worry about with my kids are ridiculous, but I can’t stop them.  Parenting is so hard.  I’m sorry for your trauma, I really am.  Thinking of you and hoping peace finds its way to you.

You may want to talk to your doctor to see if they think you’d be a good candidate for CBT for insomnia.

In any case, you are not being over the top. You have legitimate concerns and being a parent means you are going to spend the rest of your life worrying about / being concerned about your kids (I have a three-year-old myself)!
