Does anyone else here have issues with transient (intermittent) insomnia?

For me it typically comes in waves.

Yes. Even normal sleepers get transient insomnia. There is no big deal. Move on with your life. Sleep works itself out. You don’t need to do anything.

I would get off any meds too if I were you. Anything that causes you to doubt your own sleep ability automatically reinforces insomnia. The mindset that insomnia must be avoided at all costs actually causes it.

When people recover, they don’t necessarily sleep well all the time. It just means they are no longer fearful of insomnia. And that is the ultimate cure. Not fearing anymore. Not endlessly trying to control it. Stop this fight from within. Ultimately, who is the enemy? Who gave you insomnia? Nobody except yourself. The problem comes from within and it should end from within. Nothing external including any meds is really required. You just need to change your mindset. Best wishes to you.

OK thank you for your reply. Upon some reflection, I agree that everyone experiences “transient insomnia” from time to time. As to my meds, I do plan on discontinuing them at some point but carefully tapering off under the supervision of a physician. Having said that, I find that daily exercise and getting sunlight are naturally effective remedies.

Good to hear about that. Hope everything goes well and I look forward to hearing that you are sleeping peacefully and naturally again without meds. Best wishes.

Can I ask about how long you’ve had issues with insomnia?

If you asked me, I have had issues with insomnia actually my whole life. I always had occasional “insomnia” every now and then. But they didn’t become a huge problem because I never paid much attention to them. But as I grew older, I started getting more protective of sleep. And that’s when it started becoming worse.

So I had to relearn everything all over again. Trying to fix insomnia actually causes insomnia. Because it causes you to fixate on it. And all this attention and obsession is mentally stimulating enough to cause insomnia. Plus all the anxiety and worry over it when you don’t do well can only make it worse.

So now, I just go back to my old way of sleeping. I don’t track or monitor or try to fix anything. No drugs, no medications, no remedies, no anything to improve sleep. Just in and out of bed at regular times. That’s it. And I get the maximum amount of sleep like this. Plus transient insomnia every now and then but that’s a lot better than having them all the time due to performance driven worry or anxiety.
