I have been struggling with insomnia for the past month. I had never struggled with sleep before. I have read and researched and I think I got to the point that I don’t panic anymore if it is hard to fall asleep so my palpitations used to be worse. But I wonder what will help me fall asleep? Right now it is 3am in the morning, and every time I am about to fall asleep, it seems that I am hindered by some kind of (milder) palpitations that would wake me up again. I feel very calm and not thinking about how little sleep I will get and all the things I need to do tomorrow but it still does not seem to help. I usually just end up falling asleep because I am too tired between 4-5:30 but I want this to be earlier and back to my normal. Has anyone experienced this?

What has helped me a lot is:

-leaving the bed if you’re not sleepy

-Hiding all clocks during your sleep window

-keep your sleep window strict, never sleep in or go to bed early

First, I would suggest that if you are experiencing palpitations you should speak to your doctor to see if there’s a medical explanation for them.

Next, let me say that your experience is not unique or unusual. It sounds like a common part of the insomnia struggle.

Finally, the answer to the question, “What will help me fall asleep?” is this: Stay awake for long enough, and don’t try to make sleep happen.

Ultimately, insomnia exists for as long as we try to fight or avoid it. Quite often, we need to practice and develop new skills that help us experience insomnia with less struggle — and that is what moves us closer to experiencing effortless sleep.
