Hey! I’ve recently developed trouble sleeping. Some night I have a normal nights sleep, but then I’ll go days at a time where I just don’t fall asleep. It’s so frustrating. I’ve never experienced this before, have always been a good sleeper. I assume this is what motherhood does to you.

My oldest is 4 and youngest is 17 months. Thankfully both have been excellent sleepers since an early age. But still, I developed insomnia during pregnancy, then newborns….hahaha. I’m not a stressed or anxious person, but having my sleep constantly change during the last few year, I’m not surprised it’s a little out of whack now.

Lucky you, having a couple of good sleepers there! How do you currently respond to the nighttime wakefulness when it shows up?

I give myself some time to fall asleep but if I notice I’m pretty awake after a while I get out of bed and go on the couch and read until I feel sleepy again and try again. It can be like ping pong at times. Some nights I feel sleepy and I stay in bed all night, but I feel like I’m just laying there with my eyes closed all night not really sleeping. But I must be getting some sleep because I usually wake up feeling rested.

It sounds as though you’re responding in a way that’s less likely to get you tangled up in a struggle — which is good! Wakefulness itself is something we all experience when we’re in bed, for varying amounts of time. It’s when we struggle with it that it tends to become more difficult!
