I'm new to this forum, wondering if anyone can help. I've suffered with insomnia for a long time now. I do take 3mg of Melatonin each night and also Valerian supplements. I tend to have a better night sleep followed by a really bad one. This is a sort of rough pattern for me – one ok night followed by one bad night. So…. I have to have a day of feeling brain dead and low mood etc to then get some sleep that night. When people say, they've have 'x' number of hours sleep, unless it's good quality sleep, I don't see how it counts., how can you possibly measure it??? I've been asleep for 3 hours approx at a time and feel terrible, if it would have been 3 hours of good quality sleep, then that's different but I can't control the quality. Therefore, unless we know as humans how we can make ourselves enter Real DEEP quality sleep, how can we ever overcome our insomnia – it's too complex ! The only thing I can think of is increasing my sleep drive, i.e Sleep Restriction Therapy. But most of the time, this technique lets me down. I usually go to bed at 10.30pm/ get up at 6am. I awake normally 2.30am & 4am but go back to sleep….but as I said, sometimes I know I've been asleep but is a light sleep, therefore I feel very little benefit. Please help anyone…..nicky

Hi Nicky and welcome to the forum. Do you happen to know what is preventing you from getting the sleep you are craving? For example, do you find that a 'racing mind' is keeping you awake at night? Do you know what caused your sleep problems to begin with?

Hi Martin – thank you for taking the time to reply…..it's a lonely feeling as you well know.

To be honest, I don't worry about anything in the night… EXCEPT about how I might feel the next day if I don't sleep well. When I wake, usually twice in the night, I do manage to go back off to sleep (not always straight away). Last night I woke at 2.30am and woke again at 6am and got up… But I just feel so tired even though I had that 3.5 hours after the second awakening. When I've slept well I feel great, so I know there's nothing wrong with me, it's just pure sleep deprevation that makes me feel awful. These are the supplements I take right before I go to bed at 10.30pm.

          3 mg Melatonin

          Magnesium Citrate

          Valerian Root

          1 x 200 mg of 5 HTP

If I'm honest, I am a sensitive, slightly worring character…maybe it's my subconscious mind waking me. But I understand it's normal to wake in the night, I just want quality sleep when I do sleep. If I've got something important on the next day, you can bet ya life I have rubbish sleep. Thanks again for your time.
