My wife and I will be going up to Lake Placid for the weekend – it'll be nice to get out of the city and relax for a couple of days. What really gets me about Valentine's Day is the way prices of chocolates and flowers goes through the roof. The price changes aren't even subtle, either! Ah well, that's capitalism for ya I guess!
So what are you up to for Valentine's Day? Anything special?

February 8, 2010 at 3:58 pm #10098It's my daughter's birthday on the 15th so my Valentine's Day is typically spent with kids her age trying to keep everyone happy. I think this year she can bring three friends and we'll go to the movies. I'm too brain dead to plan a huge event. lol

Sounds stressful to me! I can imagine that kids certainly hamper Valentine's Day celebrations – even more so when there is a birthday to contend with as well!

It's alright, really. Our anniversary is at the beginning of the month, so typically we shuttle V-day romance anyway. 🙂

I think there needs to be a 'Singles Day'. I remember watching an episode of The Apprentice in the UK once and the challenge was to come up for a new occasional day for a greetings card company. One of the teams had the great idea of having a Singles Day – a day to celebrate being single.
I thought it was a brilliant idea. Maybe someone needs to start a movement. There's a lot to celebrate in being single – none of which is recognised at this time of the year!!

You need to be in Canada. I don't get the feeling that Valentine's Day is being rammed down my throat here like it is in the U.S. In fact, Safeway is still selling a dozen long-stemmed roses for $14.99. I can't even find those over-priced Valentine's paper plates and napkins for my son's school party anywhere. 😕
When I was single and didn't have a boyfriend on Valentine's Day, I always did something nice for myself, like buy a too expensive pair of shoes or take a quick weekend trip somewhere or even buy myself flowers. I never understood the logic of getting cheated out of something I wanted just because there was no one around to give it to me. 😛

I hate St. Valentines day, always have. I do not think you need to have a day where you celebrate your love for someone…or have a day for a stalker to justify creeping you out with cards and various other tat…and that's before I get started on the extortionate prices that stores deem justified for flowers, candy,
bits of stringnaughty underwear and so on.Don't get me wrong, I'd like to think I'm a romantic person…I have written my Cuddle Bunny poetry, made her champagne breakfast in bed on her birthday and so on but at the same time, I think you should be able to do this any time.
Sorry, rant over.

A lot of people would agree with you – myself included. It's just a commercial day to encourage consumerism. Real love is every day, not one day!

February 12, 2010 at 7:24 am #10106Valentine's Day (like New Year's Eve) is a non-holiday to me. If you love someone, you should live every day like it's Valentine's Day. My honey and I are going to have dinner at a great authentic Italian restaurant that reminds us of our recent trip to Positano/Capri – Trattoria Toscana in the Village.
My funniest Valentine's Day memories are from my single days. My other single friends and I would throw an “Angry Women's Party” – basically a 3 hour all you can drink event for women only. We would put up paper on the walls where we could dedicate declarations of “not love” to the guys who wronged us (i.e. To John – for making me sleep in the wet spot). Very cathartic and funny – then we would open up the event to guys, who would get a kick out of all the dedications, not to mention all my drunk girlfriends.
February 12, 2010 at 7:55 am #10107My boyfriend and I will be facing the consumerist nightmare that is Valentines day with our usual sense of scepticism and irony. A contest to find the most vomit inducing cards and stupid gifts will suffice. Who needs a day to acknowledge the awesomeness of your other half?!

I love it when couples do something for Valentine's day that has a personal meaning to them. When did you go to Italy? I spent a couple of weeks there in 2004; visited Rome, Florence, Pisa and Cinque Terre.
As for the Angry Women's Party – sounds like you should run franchises! What a brilliant idea!!

Sometimes a sense of humour is all that can get you through!! I like to get the most awful cards for my family at Christmas time – sometimes I think it's more fun for me than for them!!

We were there last May – 2 weeks in Rome, Positano & Capri. Capri is truly one of the most beautiful places! I'll start a new thread as I would love to see where other people here have traveled.
