Waking three hours early

      Since I retired several years ago, I just slept whenever I felt like it. However my sleep patterns got pretty erratic. I had heard that a person should go to bed and awake at the same time daily, so I thought I’d try it. I had listened to an audiobook explaining circadian rhythms and I decided that 11:00 pm would be ideal for bedtime. That’s when my problems REALLY began. I would wake up at all hours of the night. I would be awake at 1 am, 3 am or 5 am. Now consistently, I wake up at 4:00 in the morning when I want to wake up at 7:00 am. What do I do?

        Hello!
        Here is the thing about sleep: Nobody has the ability to control it, ever. And nobody can control when they awake either! But getting overstressed over it can probably make it worse or make you waken more often. If you are willing to accept that you cant control sleep, that you will go to bed at X and get out at Y, disregard whatever happens in between and leave everything up to your body to decide and be willing to accept any outcome, including the awakenings, you will do quite well indeed. Sleep is just sleep, there’s nothing mysterious about it, and there’s no way your body can do it wrong either!
