18M. Moved house 2 years ago. At first there were no curtains so I wasn’t sleeping well and the tiredness began. Then i added some to block out light, but the waking up tired continued. I always sleep 9 hrs, not waking up at night. My room is dark and quiet. Good sleep routine, environment, and hygiene. Blood tests, examinations, and sleep study done. No caffeine, drugs or alcohol. Tried CBT, melatonin, magnesium, acupuncture, meditation (not all at the same time). I’ve been away from home for periods up to 2 weeks and sleep has been the same there, never feel refreshed. My diet is good and I exercise regularly, and my mental health is good. I’ve tried everything, doctors don’t know what to do, any ideas greatly appreciated.

If you are feeling great then what’s the problem over getting a little less sleep?

If you didn’t wake up tired, what would be different in your life? What would you be doing that you are unable to do now? When you wake up tired, does that sensation remain exactly the same throughout the day, or does it change as the day progresses?

I wake up tired and remain exhausted for the whole day, every day. However I always feel worse in the mornings upon waking. If I didn’t wake up tired, I would be able to go to the gym and play football regularly, socialise and perform better academically. This is why it’s frustrating.

Feeling tired and exhausting is difficult and things would no doubt be a lot easier if they didn’t exist! When you don’t go to the gym, play football, or socialize because of the tiredness and exhaustion, does the tiredness and exhaustion disappear?

Well what makes you think sleep has anything to do with your tiredness? Could there be an underlying medical condition? See your doctor and seek medical advice. There are many types of people: some who sleep 10-12 hours a day but still feel tired regardless and some who only do 4-5 and feel great and energetic all day! There is also such thing as sleep inertia, everyone wakes up feeling sleepy but the feeling generally goes away as you get on with your day. Whatever your case, sleep probably isn’t the real cause, the cause might be something else or it could even be you are depressed over your sleep because you aren’t getting what you want but that isn’t your fault either! It’s your own body that decides how much sleep it needs and gets and not you.
