I have always had trouble sleeping , started ambien 6 yrs ago am take 1/2 pill nightly, although I wanted to start weening off it. I tried Lexapro for a few yrs, an anti-anxiety medication and apparently it did help a little because now that I've been off of it for 8 months, my sleep is definitely worse. With the ambien, I fall asleep ok but when I wake up in the night I don't get back to sleep. Im thinking of trying Wellbutrin , another anti depressant/anti-anxiety as friends say it helps them sleep. But then again, they never had insomnia ! I took a whole ambien fri not as I was desperate and I slept but still woke up three times. Thought I had finally had a good nights sleep until after my jog, I felt incredibly tired again . My life has been ruined lately due to no sleep, for ex I had to cancel plans fri nt, and cancelled the gym today as I can't keep my eyes open ! Last nt I had too much to drink and alcohol is horrendous for sleep.! So my point to this insane run on is: has anyone found Wellbutrin helpful? My mind wont shut off, than my heart starts to race, it's dreadful!!
April 23, 2012 at 9:39 am #13883Hey Roseleb:)
So sorry you're having a bad run at the mo – i totally know where you're coming from when you say you've had to cancel plans due to lack of sleep. I don't use sleeping pills all that often but when i did try Ambien 5mg i too found that it knocked me out initially but would then wake and be unable to get back to sleep. In fact, i probably felt more anxious after it wore off hence i decided to discontinue it. Are you on a decent dose? I only took 5mg nightly which clearly wasn't enough to get me through the night. 10mg is the standard adult dose so perhaps it isn't worth taking half measures – maybe better to take a full does alternate nights rather than have a poor result every night?! Are you on the CR form of it, if not perhaps you could try that just to get some temporary relief. It may keep you asleep for longer? When i do use actual sleeping pills, i generally go for Zopiclone, seems to keep me asleep for longer. I'm assuming you've tried that one too??
As for the anti-d side of things, i'm afraid i don't have experience with Wellbutrin. Did you find Lexapro didn't agree with you or did you just want to come off to seee how you are without it? i am on the sister drug to Lexapro, citalopram which generally keeps the lid on anxiety for me.I have had spells without it over the past 15 or so years but always ended up back on it, especially after having children! If you're battling with that side of things now you have stopped yours would you reconsider going back to Lexapro (esp as you feel in hindsight it might have helped) or are you keen to try something different? When recommencing citalopram i do find that i get worse insomnia for a couple of weeks but that usually settles down as the anti anxiety effect kicks in.Anyway, i hope that others here can shed some light on Wellbutrin for you….hope you get some better sleep tonight and can make it to the gym at some point.

April 24, 2012 at 5:25 pm #13884The only time I've heard of Wellbutrin being mentioned alongside insomnia is as an actual insomnia cause!

That being said, I'll fire this one out in the next insomniac bulletin and see if any other members can offer their advice/experience.

April 26, 2012 at 1:01 am #13885From all I read, Wellbutrin is never used to treat insomnia and 10% of people get insomnia from it! And I'd be that 10%! I only take 5 mg of ambien and it helps me fall asleep but in middle of night, I wake up and can't go back. But like I said, when I took awhile one, and slept, I had worst hangover from it next day! I'm definitely suffering from anxiety. So am starting Trazedone! Anxiety explains the heart rate suddenlybstartingto flutter in night, just did when I tried to nap. I was awake and not even tired on 3 hrs sleep but my nerves were shot I was highly emotional, depressed up until yesterday when I finally slept 4 hrs straight! Last nt was 6', hoping for 8 tonightvsocmaybe I'll feel normal someday! Thanks for your input everyone!
April 26, 2012 at 6:40 pm #13886..well good luck with tthe Trazedone… would be interested to hear how you find it..think it's quite sedating isn't it so should hopefully give you some better nights.
April 27, 2012 at 7:16 pm #13887Well trazedone let's me sleep a straight 7 hrs !! I've been so excited to wake up, look at cloc and it's 7 am and not 3! I still don't fall asleep right away-20 minutes – 1 hr last nt. I feel it w/I 1/2 hr of taking it and weird thing I have to look up happens, my legs get real weak. I'm suffering from the hangover effect from it, still very foggy/groggy. But when I tried to nap yesterday and go to bed early, couldn't sleep. It's like my body knows it doesn't need it. I Just want to close my eyes today but pushing through. I hear it will happen first few days to a week while body Adjust. So still tired but sleeping thru the night is wonderful!
May 5, 2012 at 1:55 am #13888I had to quit trazedone, it makes me way to groggy during the day. But I'll keep it on hand if I need to feel tired. Apparently that's good enough for SOME people to make them sleep. It as us insomniacs now, NOT US! I went to a sleep specialist and am goin to undergo another sleep study! Last one was 2005 and the records are gone.
May 7, 2012 at 10:51 am #13889sorry to hear the Traz edone didn't work out for you Roseleb but clearly not viable if it zombifies you to that degree! (i was on mirtazapine for a while and found a similar thing.. hated the way i felt during the day hence quit it, tho probably not quite as extreme as trazedone?) Hope the sleep study throws some light on things for you. How do you get referrals for these kind of studies? Seems to be virtually impossible in the UK unless you have a condition such as sleep apnea. V frustrating.
June 9, 2012 at 4:49 pm #13890Sorry it took me so long to get back . I got my sleep study ordered from a sleep specialist. OfcourSe I slept like hell at the study, hard to sleep w wires attached all over! Next appt isn't until next month.
June 9, 2012 at 5:00 pm #13891Thanks for the update, Roseleb. I've always wondered how useful sleep studies could be for insomniacs – when we find it hard to sleep in the comfort of our own homes, how are we supposed to find any improvement when wired up and 'monitored' overnight?
If you fail to sleep at a sleep study, I wonder how any useful information can be gained. Did they give you any new information or advice after the study?

June 9, 2012 at 8:26 pm #13892I dont meet w the dr again until July for results. I do know that durIng sleep study, my heart started fluttering a few times like it does on occasion. Well see if it was picked up. I don't have much faith. I think the dr is trying to rule out sleep apnea. I know I Don't have that. My latest Issue is I'm actually sleeping but feel like I havent! I can't win!!
June 12, 2012 at 8:36 pm #13893I have had problems with fatigue and my doctor suspects it's just from not sleeping well. I tried citalopram (generic for Celexa) for awhile but that did me no apparent good. My doctor just gave me some samples of Wellbutrin to try for a few weeks. Supposedly it is supposed to give you more energy, but insomnia can be aside effect; if so they recommend you take it in the morning. I've only been on it for a couple of days so we'll see.
June 12, 2012 at 10:13 pm #13894I'll be interested in how you make out, please keep us informed!
June 13, 2012 at 1:06 am #13895I've been taking Wellbutrin for the past 17 years. My doctor started me on it for depression, not as a sleep aid. She has me take in the morning so it'll be worn off by bedtime because it does cause insomnia.
We have enough things in our lives that cause or can cause insomnia. We don't need to add to the problem.
June 13, 2012 at 2:15 pm #13896Thanks for that. I will not be trying it then! Anyone ever hear it a natural drug called Relora to help w sleep?!
