When you can't sleep? I've tried reading, tv and listening to the radio but those night time hours seem to drag so much and I'm too tired to do anything productive.
How does your insomnia effect you during the day, do you just try and carry on as normal or is that impossible? I try to carry on as normal as possible but it's not always easy! Holding down a job and having a family to look after is hard when you are sleep deprived.

September 21, 2011 at 11:41 am #13000Generally, when I can't sleep, I do the same things as you. I sometimes manage to doze off with music on really low but not often. My health psychologist recommended writing stuff down that was playing on my mind. This really helped! It cleared my head a little and helped my head relax which is most of the battle with insomnia in my case.
I'm 'lucky' because I don't have to work or have kids to run after so I can sleep during the day if I am going through bad spell with insomnia. It doesn't really help in the long run though, such a vicious circle!

I work on my social networking community, I'm not rushing it though, I take my time, a couple of hours here and there when I can't sleep and want something to do. Take my time so i don't make any mistakes.
Or, I play my favourite MMORTS “Call of Combat”.

I take pills to sleep. So I don't have to think about what to do. But now my sleep is “wake and worry”. So when I wake up (maybe 8 times/night) I say to myself, “NO BRAIN, NO WORRY” No brain means to not use my brain at all. Because thinking always leads to worry.
The other night when I came home from work, I actually fell asleep naturally. WOW! How long since that's happened.
September 23, 2011 at 11:09 pm #13003I just do stuff on the computer or read, play guitar, whatever else I can think of. But sometimes I just sit there and stare at the wall. xD
January 15, 2012 at 12:33 am #13004I'm so exhausted, at this point, that I mostly just lie there in bed until it's time to get up and drag myself to work…. It's awful. Sometimes, I read for a while.
February 14, 2012 at 12:13 am #13005I start up alot of hobbies: knitting looms, jewelry making, sewing, etc. It doesn't satisfy mevthe way art
Does (I'm an artist by training) but I have a hard time painting and drawing if I haven't gotten a good night's sleep.
At least it keeps me less focused on the clock to hsve busy hands when I can't sleep and the tv

Yikes! Maybe you need to start an Etsy store and start profiting from your insomnia!

November 8, 2012 at 2:00 pm #13007Yeah, I'm usually so exhausted I'll just lay there in bed with my eyes closed til its time to get up and go to work, the time seems to pass so quickly when u can't sleep and then dread going to work, sometimes I'll clean or try the 'if u don't sleep in 15minutes get up' but I just end up staying up the same way as if I was laying dwn with my eyes closed the whole time, it gets so frustrating haha
November 8, 2012 at 5:14 pm #13008I am so sorry you are suffering. I am very familiar with the agonies of insomnia.
I have just started working on CBT for insomnia. I used to get up watch tv and have a cig. But in CBT they say not to do anything remotely stimulating like smoke, tv, lights, work and so on. Since I have started CBT, if I wake up I go to the other room and read with a book light. Or listen to my Deep Sleep app for the iPhone in the dark. It is only 2.99 and it is really wonderful. Andrew Johnson is the guy who does it and he has the most relaxing voice and I quite like it because listening to him helps me not think so much. Also I get out of bed because in CBT terms the goal is to improve your sleep efficiency which is the time you sleep divided by the time you spend in bed. They say that you should do nothing in your bed except sleep and sex. The idea is that by doing other things in bed, we give our body the cue that the bed isn't just for sleeping, which contributes to our insomnia. I have been working on this for the last three days and it seems to be helping a bit. Also you have to go to bed and wake up at same time everyday including weekends so that you are giving your body consistent cues as when it should be tired.
As for how it effects me during the day, well that depends on how bad the insomnia was, if I am hormonal (girls you know what I mean) and how long the bad insomnia nights have been. The last few weeks it was so bad that i was virtually crying everyday at least once if not more. I was so tired I couldn't cook dinner or a take a shower more than every 5 days or leave my house for anything other than groceries or really necessary errands. I have been getting irritated at people and things very easily. It can be really bad. One thing that helps for me, is to read articles on and listen to audio on Buddhist principles. Buddhism has many practices and concepts that make going through something awful not so bad.
I hope this is what you were looking for in terms of feedback.
