What worked for me in minimizing my insomnia were lifestyle changes and as well as taking the proper medication(s). It was a process of self-discovery, experimenting, and trying different approaches. As far as lifestyle changes go, the steps with the most impact that I took are exercising daily and going outside for a prescribed amount of time. As far as medications go, what I found that worked for me is a combination of Quivivic, Hydroxozine, and Olanzapine, although taking three medications for sleep at once is probably “too much.”

        Hello Daniel,

Thank you for sharing. I like your suggestions but what about the pills, do you intend to take them for life or will you begin a tapering program with consultation with your medical professionals to start reducing the dosage until you are off completely?

As I wrote in my previous post, taking three medications for sleep is too much, and there are side effects such as grogginess and sluggishness associated with them. In my opinion, however, sleeping with side effects outweighs the experience of going without sleep. However, I intend to taper off the Hydroxozine and Quivivic slowly as I believe these don’t need to be taken every night. As to the Olanzapine, I intend to stay on that indefinitely. I did attempt to go off that one “cold turkey” at some point and it was nightmarish. Furthermore, Olanzapine is an antipsychotic that, at low doses, can be taken for life if need be.

I also wanted to add that at some point I will try to discontinue the Olanzapine, in the hopes of getting unmedicated, natural sleep. I did “cold turkey” that med but the result was hellish and I had to go back on it again. I do NOT recommend stopping a med abruptly without tapering it off slowly, nor should you do that without consulting with your doctor first.

I was just wondering if anyone here has ever taken Olanzapine for sleep, and if so, whether they could recommend a tapering-off plan for getting off it. As I wrote earlier, “cold-turkey” stopping of that medication was hellish, and I do not recommend doing that.
